We do a number of things to help the environment. We have insulated the basement and attic, put new weatherstrip around doors and windows, lowered the thermostat, purchased energy efficient appliances and light bulbs, use only latex paint, plug in the block heater for a few hours only when we use the car in winter, and use only gasoline with ethanol. We also recycle everything we can, have composters, plant trees and shrubs, and collect rainwater in three water barrels to use when watering outdoors. We also do not use backyard fire pits.

Much of the electricity is made by burning coal or natural gas, so:
I don't drink coffee or tea, so I save a lot of power.
I keep all electronics off, unless I am using them.
I have my water heater turned down to a lower temperature setting, and I only switch it on a couple of hours, before I need it.
I try to keep my house cool by keeping the blinds and curtains closed, and then only use the air-conditioner when it gets too hot.
I replaced all my light bulbs with compact fluorescents and LED lights.

I bicycle whenever I can, and I use mass transit whenever possible.

In winter, I put plastic on the windows, to keep the house warmer and reduce the amount of time the furnace runs. I turn down the thermostat at night and before I leave home.

We have been recycling and composting for over 35 years. Right now we have one black composter for kitchen scraps and large bins where we compost leaves, grass and the straw we use to cover our plants for winter.
Everywhere we live we have planted numerous trees and shrubs. Our present home is on a 90 foot lot and we have been told the back half looks like a park with the large deciduous trees , fruit trees, shrubs and roses. With the polluted air here in Saskatchewan we feel we need to do whatever we can to help clean the air and trees do help.

I have been recycling everything possible and composting since before these became good words to use in conversation. I continue to do so. Mulching is so good for our trees, shrubs, flowers (pereninials or annuals). We can enrich our own areas without purchasing a lot of products every year.

I have a problem in that we have been talking about a place to recycle glass jars for many years and still nothing is available in Saskatoon. How come a small community can have this and we cannot. I am thinking about all the canning I used to do when my family was young and growing up and now the amount of canning is very small as better ways of keeping our food and not eating so much sweets but rather eating more fresh foods is now encouraged. We also have many jars from pickles, miracle whip and cheeze whiz, etc. I do not throw them out and I can only find so many uses for them in and around my home.

I have also done quite a bit of renovating this last year and continue to do improvements on a yearly basis to make my home more energy efficient, look more modern and comfortable. I try to introduce more plants that do not use as much water or maintenance providing greater time enjoying the beauty of nature all around us.

I do wish that the rain barrels and new compost bin program provided a greater time to pick up after purchasing as everyone does not have access to a truckl

I just do little things like riding my bike or walking instead of driving. I wash with cold water, limit my electrical use and recycle. It's the little things that can matter!

I retro-fitted my house 20 years ago [still need to replace basement windows] . I have a gas dryer,60 gallon gas water heater ,gas bbq and an mid-eff. furnace. My gas bill is $70 per month. I installed roll up awnings on the east & south sides of the house and made shade awning for my skylight. The house was built around 1901and stays real nice & cool in the summer

Insulated my basement, went on energy site to compare, saved 41% from one year to the next in gas consumption, with only R12 (2x4) insulation. Installed energy efficient light bulbs throughout the house and low flush toilets.
Now use LED xmas lights on a timer and have both vehicles on timers for the block heater. A normal block heater uses approx $1.50 a day in power in 24hrs, that can really add up, pays for timer pretty quick.
Installed a programable thermostat many years ago.
I wash everything in cold water, can't convince the wife of that yet.

We cut back on how many decorations and lights we put up this year to save energy.

Go Green, my three children are all under the age of 12 and live quite aways from school. In the summer they bike to school and in the winter they take the transit, which requires a transfer. I also bike to work and my husband walks (2 kms) to and from work each day. Laundry is done with cold water, showers are limited. and we recycle. I just hope that these little help.

We unplug most of our appliances when we arent using them. It saves energy and makes a difference on your electrical bill! Laptop, phone charger, DVD player, fans, space heater...
