Expensive Halloween Trick
Wed, Nov 4, 2009 06:16 PM CST

A Halloween trick didn't turn into much of a treat for a local farmer. A $360 000 tractor was stolen, and driven into a slough.

DARIUS HOFER/Owner of Tractor
"We've been farming for 53 years, and this is the first time I've seen such a mess."

It was a real job getting the tractor out. Now that it is, the post-mortem is discouraging.

DARIUS HOFER/Owner of Tractor
"As far as we're concerned, the damage to the tractor is a write off."

IRWIN BEITEL/Reeve of Lajord
"We're really disappointed what's happened here. There's been acts of vandalism in the RM before, but this has really crossed the line."

Hofer had locked his tractor Saturday evening. It was discovered missing Sunday. They surmise whoever stole it must have had a key to the same model of John Deere tractor.

DARIUS HOFER/Owner of Tractor
"The people that did this, they have no moral, no respect, for themselves or any of the neighbours around here."

IRWIN BEITEL/Reeve of Lajord
"We don't think it's city kids that come out here. It's someone that knows the area really good, based on the tracks we followed for 15 miles. And we believe it's local people in the local area doing this damage."

That only serves to make the matter worse. Not only was the tractor stolen, but so too was the trust one neighbour shares with another.

IRWIN BEITEL/Reeve of Lajord
"I farm out here too, and we leave equipment out in the fields here too, and this is just devastating. You don't know if it's going to happen to you. We lock our equipment, but locking doesn't help anymore it seems."

The RCMP has been called in. The community of Lajord is offering a reward to anyone with information about the crime.

Ryan Pilon, CTV News, Lajord.
