VIENNA, Austria - The coach of an Austrian women's handball team has resigned after going on court to stop an opposing player from scoring in a Champions League game last week.

Gunnar Prokop says he "quit my job as a trainer and will go through this with a psychiatrist. . . . I still can't understand why I've done this."

Prokop, in charge of the Hypo Niederoesterreich team, went onto the court four seconds before the end of Thursday's match and intentionally collided with an opposing player to stop a counter-attack and deny Metz a chance to score. The match ended in a 27-27 draw.

Handball's European governing body has opened disciplinary proceedings against Prokop and is expected to reach a verdict before Hypo's next European match against Krim Ljubljana on Sunday.
