Regina motorists couldn't get a grip on city streets Sunday morning. Freezing rain turned roads into skating rinks. Drivers were helpless as their vehicles crashed into each other. Sgt. Gord Pilon with the Regina Police Service says it was a busy morning.
"Since 3 o'clock this morning we've had approximately 20 reportable accidents. Luckily only one with injuries."
One accident saw a van smash into a sanding truck. It took quite a while to pry the two vehicles apart.
For those who chose two feet and a heartbeat, it wasn't much easier. Unwavering icy sidewalks was nearly impossible. It seemed as though there just wasn't enough ice melt to go around. Or window scrapers. For those parked outside, chipping off the thick coating of ice proved a tough workout.
"It sucks, takes a while and a lot of energy." said Kayle Hoff
Out on the highway travel was not recommended in many areas of the province. Even at slow speeds vehicles slid right off the road. Police advised against travel anywhere in or outside of the city.
"Put it off till when the roads are better, don't be in any rush to go anywhere and slow down." says Pilon
While conditions improved later in the day, they were expected to worsen overnight. Lows of minus 11 and snow will make roads icy once again and travel will likely still not be recommended in many parts of the province.
